Plastic is a great invention, but...

Plastic is strong, reliable, keeps food fresh for longer, can withstand a lot, is extremely light and is cheap. Plastic has all sorts of useful end goals. However, the way plastic is used within our society is a huge problem.

Due to the laziness of both producers and consumers, a lot of disposable plastic is used. The material is designed to last a long time, but most of the plastic produced is only used once before it ends up, at best, in the right bin.

After the lifespan of plastic, there are several possible scenarios. Plastic recycling is a possibility, but rarely happens. 91% of plastic is not recycled. But what happens to all this plastic?

A large part of the plastic is simply burned in industrial furnaces together with other residual waste. Another part is dumped in landfills or left behind by people in nature.

Belgium is among the champions when it comes to recycling plastic waste. However, only 20% of plastic is recycled correctly in Belgium. In Europe, that is only 14%. The rest is therefore left behind somewhere on this planet.

The impact.

The way plastic is used in this society therefore has a clear negative impact that is becoming increasingly noticeable.

There is an impact on humans. We know for sure that microplastics enter our bodies, but the consequences are not yet fully understood.

There is an impact on animals. Both on land and in water, plastic is present in the biotopes of animals. Plastic in the environment will sooner or later break down into smaller and smaller pieces. Microplastics are all pieces smaller than half a centimeter but often so small that they are no longer visible to the naked eye. Animals suffer from the plastic in their biotopes in various ways:
  • They think it is food and eat it, which creates a choking hazard.
  • They ingest undetectable microplastics, which can have detrimental effects on their metabolism.
  • Animals can be injured by large pieces of plastic.

There is an impact on the planet. There are indications that by 2050 there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish.

There is hope.

So it is undeniable that there is indeed a problem. However, there is also a growing global awareness within all layers of the population, both among producers, consumers and policy makers. It is our duty to become part of the solution together with you, because both you and we have long been part of the problem.
Being aware of the problem is one thing, but acting to solve the problem is another.
...
BRAUZZ. starts with cleaning products because they are traditionally packaged in disposable plastic bottles. Together we can already make a big impact here. We can also reveal that we are not sitting still and are currently busy reinventing how we can package other household products.
