What is a probiotic toilet cleaner and how does it work?
A probiotic toilet cleaner uses beneficial micro-organisms instead of chlorine or harsh chemicals to tackle the cause of odours and dirt. Where classic cleaners often only mask smells, probiotics keep working after you have cleaned. That keeps your toilet fresh for longer.
The problem with classic toilet cleaners
Open the cupboard under your sink and chances are you will find a bottle of chlorine or another strong chemical formula. You recognise them straight away by that typical swimming pool smell. That smell gives you the feeling that everything is clean, but says little about what is really going on.
A strong smell often just lays a veil over the problem. Organic dirt and the bacteria that cause bad odours come back after a few days. On top of that, chlorine can irritate your eyes and airways, especially in a small space like the toilet.
That is why you sometimes feel you keep cleaning without the difference lasting. You tackle the result every time, but the source stays put: under the rim, in tiny scratches in the porcelain and in limescale build-up you cannot see with the naked eye.

So how does a probiotic cleaner work?
Did you know?
Probiotics are beneficial micro-organisms, also called "good bacteria". In a cleaner, they break down organic dirt, such as urine residue and deposits, and with it the food source of odour-causing bacteria.
The principle is simple: the good bacteria go after what the bad ones need. No food, no odours. So you are not fighting the symptom, but the cause.
The big difference is in what happens after you clean. The probiotics stay behind on the surface and keep working there. They make it harder for unwanted bacteria to settle again, so your toilet stays fresh for longer without you having to clean more often.
An added benefit: micro-organisms are so small that they also get into seams, under the rim and into spots your brush cannot reach properly. That is often exactly where the source of that stubborn smell sits.
Probiotic versus chlorine: the differences at a glance
Both clean your toilet, but they do it in a very different way. These are the main differences.
Probiotic toilet cleaner vs. chlorine cleaner
| Probiotic cleaner | Chlorine cleaner | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Breaks down organic dirt and so tackles the cause of odour | Kills bacteria and masks odour with a strong smell of its own |
| Lasting effect | Stays active after cleaning | One-off effect, stops after flushing |
| Scent | Mild and fresh | Typical swimming pool smell |
| Safety | Gentler on eyes and airways | Can irritate, never mix with other cleaners |
| Environmental impact | Biodegradable formulas possible | Strong chemicals end up in the environment via wastewater |
| Rule of thumb | Ideal for your weekly clean and a fresh toilet | Only needed if you really have to disinfect |
To be fair: a probiotic cleaner is not a disinfectant. With very stubborn dirt or a thick layer of limescale, it also needs a little more time. Leave it to work for longer or repeat the clean a few times. For your regular cleaning routine at home you do not need disinfection, and that is exactly where a probiotic cleaner comes into its own.

The POWR toilet cleaner: probiotics in powder form
The POWR Toilet Cleaner combines this probiotic principle with a plastic-free powder formula. It tackles limescale, stains and sources of odour, with probiotics that go after the cause and keep working. On top of that, the powder formula is biodegradable and contains 0% microplastics.
Because you only buy the active powder, you do not haul unnecessary water and plastic into your home. One pack cleans your toilet up to 42 times. That is equal to 2 to 3 bottles of classic toilet cleaner.
This is how you use it:
- Flush. Flush the toilet first before use.
- Sprinkle. Sprinkle the cleaning powder into the bowl.
- Let it work. Give the powder a moment to do its job.
- Brush and flush. Brush until the colour changes, then flush.
That colour change shows you straight away when you are done. Handy, right?
